In this 21st century, when it is proved that girls are equal to boys and can do all things whatever boys can, then why Dowry System only favours to boys family and is a big curse for bride side. In Dowry System, according to ritual only boy’s family have right to demand cash, furniture, vehicle, expensive appliances, gold and utensils from bride side in the form of Dowry. And this illogical ritual is followed since many centuries before. Sometimes, it become a huge burden for bride’s parents and forced them to sale their property or other expensive things for fulfilling the demand by groom side, just because they are parents of a girl child.

    Causes of this system:

    1. Uneducated people who think that they are superior as they have a boy child.
    2. Orthodox mentality of old people.
    3. It has become a status symbol for some people to demand huge dowry from bride side.
    4. Lack of women education and empowerment.

    Effects of Dowry System:

    2. Mostly, a girl has to pay for this shameful tradition, they are injured, burnt and some time forced to commit suicide when her parents are not able to pay invalid expensive demands by her in laws.
    3. Parents of bride are forced to take some harsh decision (like sale their property or taking loan, etc) for arranging the money or other things, which they have asked as dowry.
    4. It gives rise to “Female Foeticide” where people kill their girl child before birth to avoid the burden of dowry at the time for her marriage and other social issues related to the girls.

    4. Advertisements, campaigns or “Nukkad Natak” are the multiple ways of spreading awareness among people about the shameful tradition of “Dowry System”.
    5. Laws should be strict against the guilty who caught while taking or demanding dowry.

“Jab Jago Tabhi Sabera”; though we have passed so many centuries with this tradition of “Dowry System” including its harmful effects on us and our future generations, but it’s never too late, now it is right time to come together for fighting against this one of the major crimes in India which still has its root in all places of our country.

Dowry System Essay 5 (600 words)

One of the worst social crimes thriving in our country is “DOWRY SYSTEM”. It is badly influencing most of the parents who have given birth to a girl child.

Nowadays, this system has been developed as the source of earning property for unmarried males. Many good girls cannot get good husbands if their parents are not well off. The bride’s families feel that they have bought the boys for their daughters. The boys are treated as the goods of the market. Newly married spouses cannot be reapportioned with each other. Therefore this system should be either eradicated or reformed.

And this crime has also become the reason of another cruel crime of “Female Feticide”. The system of dowry takes place where groom’s family are greedy and want to do a business deal with bride’s family and demands cash, vehicle, clothes, gold, furniture, appliances, utensils or other things on the cost of their son and they name it as “wedding ceremony”.
But as time passed, the system degenerated into an evil custom. It came to be looked upon as an evil and a curse. The dowry became an all- important and a primary factor in marriage. It became necessary for the parents of the girl to give a good dowry to her whether they could afford it or not. Worse still, the married life of a girl came to depend upon dowry. Marriage became impossible in the absence of a handsome dowry. Several girls, whose parents could not afford a good dowry, had to commit suicide as their greedy in-laws made their lives miserable. Newspapers are full of reports carrying harrowing tales of brides being burnt to death or driven to hang themselves because of constant nagging by their in laws. Some of the step-daughters of fortune choose the hangman’s noose while others consume poison or jump down the multi-storeyed buildings to deliver themselves from the clutches of the inhuman dowry seekers.

They have forgotten the pure and sacred feelings of wedding and just have made it as a business deal.

    Act against Dowry System:

According to the records in India, most of the incidents occur where bride is either burnt or committed suicide due to this cruel evil of dowry system.

Various actions have been taken for ending this crucial problem in our country by the government and non-government organizations.
In the recent past, the Government of India and many states have taken some anti-dowry steps. In some states, dowry has been made a cognizable offence. But legal steps are not enough. We have to create a social climate which does not favour giving and taking of dowry. Dowry seekers must be singled out and condemned. The Government should implement the anti-dowry bill strictly in the right spirit Nobody, however highly placed, should be allowed to violate the law. Expenses at the marriage celebrations should be cut down. Needy married couples should be given loans and grants to help them set up their homes. They can be asked to refund these loans in easy installments. Voluntary social service organizations and religious heads should encourage dowryless marriages in large numbers. Girls should come forward to raise a banner of revolt against the dowry seekers. They should refuse to marry such boys as expect a dowry.

By government of India, an act has been declared to prohibit the give and take dowry directly or indirectly, enacted in year of 1961. According to it, dowry “any expensive property or valuable security” taken by one party from another party, either their parents or relatives, at the time of wedding or before and after the time of wedding, it comes under the dowry prohibition act of 1961.
There is another dimension to the anti-dowry act promulgated by the government. This law is being exploited by some girls or their parents to blackmail the boys or their families after marriage. On threat of charge of prosecution for asking for dowry, husbands are being forced to shell out huge sums of money to get a divorce. This practice must be looked into and steps should be taken to see that no family is unnecessarily harassed or exploited. Divorce should be made easier to obtain. Boys and girls should both be given equal rights in the matter of obtaining a divorce.

    Penalty for demanding dowry:

Penalty for the party, whether they demand dowry directly or indirectly, is imprisonment of 6 to 24 months with the fine of not less than 10000 Rs.

Penalty for giving or taking dowry:

Penalty for both parties, if they give or take dowry, whether at the time of marriage or before and after the marriage is imprisonment of minimum 5 years with fine of 15000 Rs.

    Results of Dowry System:

It is quite obvious that result of Dowry system has been always very bad for all and further it will be more dangerous.

Some parents have to incur heavy debts for giving dowry. At times, they remain under debt for the whole of their life. Sometimes, the girl’s parents fill to raise the necessary funds for marriage. They are compelled to commit suicide in disgust and despair. No wonder, therefore, that the birth of a daughter is looked upon as a bolt from the blue.

    1. Till now various girls child are killed before birth as their parents don’t want to have burden of a girl child, because at the time of their daughter’s wedding they have to give dowry to the groom side.
    2. Bride’s parents are forced to sale their house, agriculture fields or other expensive properties to get rid of the debt which they had taken at the time of their daughter’s wedding to fulfil the demands of groom side.
    3. Accidental incidents like suicide or burning happens with the bride when her parents could not be able to fulfil the unlimited demands by her husband’s parents or relatives.

    Solutions to this problem:

Solutions for this unacceptable problem are:

    1. Firstly the law against this crime should be strict and rigid with no concession.
    2. Women education and empowerment is must for preventing this crime.
    3. Awareness by advertisements and campaigns should be spread all over country to tell people about the hazardous effects of this crime.
    4. Women should take stand against this illogical demand by groom side.

One of the worst crimes that is arising its head in most of the communities during wedding is “dowry system”, that is completely non acceptable for all.

The marriage contract today is entered into more autonomously by both men and women. The character of the marriage contract has changed even more than in outward from. The traditional marriage ceremony in civilisation was based on the principle of male dominance and female obedience. But when the wife premises to ‘obey’ where this world remains in marriage ritual, she and her husband alike are aware of the ceremony is for the most part relic of the past. Choice of mate by mate and mutual determination of the relationship that hinds them have replaced the older external and one-sided control. In our male-dominated society, women basically depend on male-domination. They have an economic dependence on the male-spouse. From here dowry-system has come.

One side we say that boys and girls are equal in all matter and girls are not less than boys; on the other side we make such a huge difference between them at the time of their marriage when boy’s parents have right to demand dowry from bride side and bride side is forced to fulfill their demand at any cost.
Eighthly, it is to be granted by the parents that a daughter is equal to a son. She has same right as son. Moreover, the female has to be conscious about her rights, necessities and urgencies in this society. Only some reservation of seats in railways compartments and buses will not solve the problem of women. The women have to capture their rights forcefully uniting against their oppressors. Otherwise, the problems will remain in the same position as before and as present.

If we want our country to be a successful and developed country, then dowry system should be completely ended.
