Introduction of Cultural Diversity

"Cultural diversity" is the joint of human societies or cultures in a specific region, or in the world as a whole. (The term is also sometimes used to refer to multiculturalism within an organization There is a general agreement among normal anthropologists that humans first emerged in Africa about two million years ago. (Smithsonian, 2008) Since then they have spread throughout the world, successfully adapting to widely differing conditions and to periodic tragic changes in local and global climate. The many separate societies that emerged around the globe differed clearly from each other, and many of these differences carry on to this day.

Culture refers to the beliefs, ideas, traditions and behaviors portrayed by certain communities and are passed from one generation to the other. Cultural diversity involves the changes that have taken place comparing what was deeply rooted in culture in ancient times and how it has been changing with time. Psychological behavior and processes are analyzed under biological bases and is known as the biological psychology. It can also be termed as behavioral neuroscience. On the other hand, the study of the nervous system is called neuroscience.

As well as the more obvious cultural differences that exist between people, such as language, dress and traditions, there are also significant variations in the way societies organize themselves, in their shared idea of morality, and in the ways they interact with their environment.
The cultural diversity means cultural differences that exist between human beings. There are several types, such as language, dances, clothing and other traditions as the organization of society. Cultural diversity is something associated with the dynamics of the associative process. People who for some reason decide their lives guided by pre-established norms tend to forget their own idiosyncrasies (mixed cultures). In other words, the whole force is imposed on individual needs. The so-called “status quo” triggers naturally and spontaneously, and as Hegel would say, in a dialectical process, the appropriateness of being significant in half. The culture inserts the individual in a social environment.

Cultural Uniformity

Cultural diversity is presented as the contrast of cultural uniformity. Some (including UNESCO) fear this hypothesis of a trend towards cultural uniformity. To support this argument they emphasize different aspects: The disappearance of many languages and dialects, regarding for example the languages of France, without legal status or protection (Basque, Breton, Corsican, Occitan, Catalan, Alsatian, Flemish, Poitou, Saintonge, etc).

The sharing of cultural information allows groups of humans to interact and cooperate effectively, so it is essential that some processes act to limit diversity. If such processes did not exist, human societies could not function as they do. Languages and dialects are the common examples of shared cultural information. Genetic evidence reveals how closely related all modern humans are.

There are several international organizations that work towards protecting helpless societies and cultures, including Survival International and UNESCO. The UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, adopted by 185 Member States in 2001, represents the first international standard-setting instrument aimed at preserving and promoting cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue.

The term diversity relates to the variety and interaction of ideas, features or elements different from each other in a particular subject, situation or environment. Culture is a term with several meanings in different depths and different specificity. There are practical and social actions that follow a certain pattern in the space / time. When our world is shrunk to the size of a village, it's easy to appreciate how diverse our fellow coworkers, friends, and neighbors are. And indeed, the world is getting smaller.

Changes in the recent decades have been experienced in many fields including reproductive and care giving roles, education, work, personal relationships and health among others. These changes occur among girls and women who initially had different sexual orientations, social classes, life experiences and ethnicities (Kim, 2008). Although stresses of life which include discrimination and oppression, role overload among others and health matters became major problems experienced due to these changes, the positive effects which were experienced included improved quality of life, equality and increased opportunities among the girls and women.

New technologies are bringing faraway lands straight to our desktop, companies are importing and exporting to foreign countries, and employers more than ever are hiring international staff to better serve the diverse population.
There has to be a balance of different cultures, ethnicities and genders so it is important to keep in mind the importance of making the units as diverse as possible when hiring healthcare staff. In order for employees to feel comfortable in the workplace and achieve satisfaction, education and teaching on culture and diversity is essential. Thanks to the increasing education among nursing staff on cultural diversity, changes are being seen in the nursing profession.

For several months, Tracy Smith from the human services division of the City of Bloomington has trained hundreds of city employees, including many engineers and transportation experts, on how to work with customers who come from different backgrounds.

Besides translating important phrases like "Please stay off the hot asphalt" in Spanish, Russian, Somali, and Hmong, Smith also helps educate city professionals on culturally specific practices such as exacting body language cues, familial roles, and religious differences. "It is about having awareness that people in different cultures do things differently," she explained. Smith also coordinates local speaking series featuring Bloomington citizens who have unique cultural experiences, such as former refugees, to share their thoughts about moving to and living in Minnesota.
In the society during past ages, girls and women in the society were faced with several problems due to the cultural beliefs that existed. According to research, many girls and women were used as sexual objects by the professionals, who instead of doing their jobs, violated the rules and regulations governing their work and professional sexual ethical standards. This lowered the dignity of women in the society, which has changed with time as the girls and women are now learned and are aware of their rights in the society. Education has helped improve their living standards and reduce the oppression they are facing in their homes, from the professionals and in the society. Different experiences in human affects how the body works, for instance anatomical changes in nerve cells is influenced by training, changes in electrical activity of brain is influenced by presence of visual stimulus and changes in hormone are influenced by the presence of a male in the presence of a female.

Stereotyping

It's important to remember when interacting with people from different cultures not to stereotype them based on your previous experiences with their culture. People develop different sets of values, preferences, and styles of communication based on a various number of factors in their lives.

Girls of color and those women considered to be living in poverty are always affected by how insensitive therapists are to cultural values and morals, racial stereotypes, economic and social conditions as well as social interaction of the gender and race. This can lead to problems which are either developed internally or even externally. In therapy and training there has been increasing awareness to the girls and women though sexual relationships, power abuses, training and education. This in most cases influences the diversity in culture and changes the norms and beliefs of the community governing the body being educated (Kim, 2008).

Language

I think that my cultural background can be described as diverse. I am happy to realize that I have relatives in different countries, all of them have different culture, but it is not a barrier at all. My values affect the way I communicate with others, as I have principles that state about my position about cultural diversity- each nation has to be respected. I do not ask a person about his cultural background to choose whether to communicate with him or not. As well, others do not mind my cultural background or other issues, as it is not important.

Individual versus collective

One of the most significant differences to consider when working with people from different cultures is the individual against collective mindset. For example, many Americans operate as individuals, gauging their successes or failures on their independent contributions to their company; this is often valued as a characteristic of independence and self-made success.

Psychological expectations in a human being have influences on several responses. This will have effect on the behavior and character of that individual, which can either be positive or negative. It has been proved from analysis that body changes when compared to the behavior are the dependent variable whereas the latter is the independent variable.

Socialist cultures, on the other hand, value employees who work well in groups and have loyalty toward other employees as well as their company. This can sometimes change workplace dynamics and make it more difficult to measure accomplishment based on Western standards.
Recognizing and understanding cultural differences in the workplace is just the beginning. Subordinate groups opinions that have developed over time may cause defensive and cautious behaviors and attempting to bridge the gap between dominant and subordinate groups could provide better communication. Managers and supervisors need to strive for a deeper knowledge and understanding of cultural differences. By establishing relationships at work with individuals different from yourself, you can begin to learn the knowledge that culture may have to offer your organization.

Cultural diversity doesn't just require differences in dress and language. It also encompasses different ways of thinking, managing, and communicating. Diversity is a concept that counters discrimination and embraces the inclusion of people with various experiences and backgrounds such education, parental status, geographic location, language, and culture.

This suggests that we are descended from a relatively small population with limited individual and sub-cultural variation. How did such diversity in peoples, societies and communities come about? How did all this massive diversity of cultures we see today come about? It was, at least partly, a result of communication and information transmission.

Diversity is about learning from others, providing support and respect to those with similar and different experiences, and creating an encouraging workplace that welcomes new opinions. Whether they're your coworkers, friends, or customers, it's always important to be polite, respectful, and inviting to others.
Summed over a population of individuals and over a span of time, some culturally characteristic behaviours, beliefs and values become more common in the population, some become less common and some disappear altogether. New cultural characteristics arise and either survives and spread through the population, or they fade away.

Single individuals are largely prisoners of the culture they inherit but the decisions they make—based on the information and knowledge they have, or acquire to reinforce or reject, or choose to ignore at the outset—and the outcomes of those decisions are what drive cultural revolution.

The importance of cultural diversity in the workplace has been, for the most part, accepted in American business. This is illustrated by the increased presence of women and minorities in the business world.

A study by the Hudson Institute for the U.S. Department of Labor found that 85% of the new entrants into the workforce in the next decade will be women, minorities, and immigrants. If you want your business to be successful and competitive in the future, you will have to utilize these human resources and participate in these diversity trends.
Ethics has a considerable effect on communication between individuals from different cultures, as it makes people realize that there are not so many differences and they do not affect life of other people. Differences have to be accepted and understood. Ethics has effect on communication between different genders, as those who respect people in general can have effective communication with positive outcome. Cultural Diversity matters to every single one of us, both professionally and personally. When a group or segment of our population is excluded or exploited, all of us are denied. Research has however shown that the girls and women when oppressed or are faced with a problem get more depressed, develop eating disorders and have develop anxieties more than the boys and men. In psychological practices with women, lots of guidance from professionals is needed because of the ever changing ways of life and practices among the girls and women in the society.

While this all may be true, we all must do our best to function as productive, happy individuals. So what are we to do? We can all struggle for change. We can all be proactive in our decisions and lifestyles rather than reactive to ignorance and intolerance. When a white woman snubs an ethnic woman, for instance, she is harming herself as well.
The majority of nursing homes have come to realize that employees from various ethnic and cultural back-grounds, as well as those of different gender can bring a completely different perspective. It is becoming more important to have an understanding of different cultural backgrounds since there are more and more patients being cared for in this country with very different cultural backgrounds. At the same time it is essential that the nursing unit is running smoothly and that patient care is the highest priority. Misunderstandings regarding culture or ethnic background can impact the patient’s care and his/her perception of treatment.

Managing Cultural Diversity at workplace

The management of cultural diversity in the workplace can be considered a response to the need to recognize, respect and capitalize on the different backgrounds in our society in terms of race, ethnicity, and gender. Different cultural groups have different values, styles, and personalities, each of which may have a important effect on the way they do business.

So information exchange and spread is the backbone of the process of formation and evolution of cultures, and this very information is disseminated and exchanged through the gigantic network of the mass media in modern times. The network is such that it has made its influence felt in every sphere of life; moreover, it is now backed by such advanced technology that the process of information exchange and communication of the information has become quicker and more sophisticated than ever before.

Rather than punishing or roasting these different management styles because they do not conform to the traditional white (male) management methods, employers should recognize these differences as benefits.
Technology of the modern world affects communication between cultures and between genders. Communication between cultures differs because some countries nowadays belong to the Third world, and other to the First world, making the communication and goals more distant. Technology affects communication between different genders in a way that one gender feels less protected and even stupid, and the other powerful and smart. Not only can diverse management styles achieve the same results as traditional methods, but cultural diversity in the workplace can also help improve the company's competitive position in the marketplace.
