I dedicate my dissertation work to my family and many friends.
A special feeling of gratitude to my loving parents, William and Louise Johnson whose words of encouragement and push for tenacity ring in my ears.
I believe that everyone should be able to follow their dreams, and should be supported in their decision. Everyone has their own dreams. Some are bigger than others, but everyone has one common goal: to achieve them. Obviously, some people can achieve their dreams more easily then others because of what that dream is, how wealthy that person’s family is
, or even by decisions their parents made when they were growing up, but the biggest part of working towards your dream is how hard you are willing to work to achieve it. I believe that everyone can achieve their dreams, no matter how big, in any situation that they grew up in as long as they are willing to work hard to achieve their goals.
My sisters Katie, Linda and Rhonda have never left my side and are very special. I also dedicate this dissertation to my many friends and church family who have supported me throughout the process. I will always appreciate all they have done, especially Suquesta Myers for helping me develop my technology
skills, LaTanja Riley-Hedgepeth for the many hours of proofreading, and Ramona Taylor for helping me to master the leader dots.
Did you ever just want to just give up on something or just wish you had never started it? Through the thick and the thin, I have stuck it out. It is always dedication that gives me that extra push in order to succeed.
I dedicate this work and give special thanks to my best friend Nelson L. Jennings and my wonderful daughter Cimone for being there for me throughout the entire doctorate program. Both of you have been my best cheerleaders.
I wish to thank my committee members who were more than generous with their expertise and precious time.
A special thanks to Dr. David Parks, my committee chairman for his countless hours of reflecting, reading, encouraging, and most of all patience throughout the entire process.
Public schools are an opportunity for students to obtain a free education. A significant amount of students who attend are less fortunate, whereas the remainder feel it is unnecessary to pay for a privilege that is so abundant. Formal education is the
foundation of a student’s career
. Clearly, this was not available to a 19th century slave, such as Douglass. He struggled and fought for his education, realizing its true worth. Do students in today’s society underestimate its value? School to many
consider it a burden rather than an opportunity. Douglass was blessed to have the chance to attain literacy. If education were to become scarce, would the attitudes of individuals change? To many, of course. Students rely on their
parents to motivate them to get up and get ready to go to school. It’s not a choice for many, but an obligation. However, this does not apply to individuals similar to Douglass
. They comprehend education is not a simple task, but an ongoing effort. Frederick Douglass is the product of hard work and dedication.
Thank you Dr. Travis Twiford, Dr. Jerome Niles, Dr. Christina Dawson, and Dr. Neil Stamm for agreeing to serve on my committee. I would like to acknowledge and thank my school division for allowing me to conduct my research and providing
any assistance requested.
Say that you grew up very poor, only had one parent, and could barely afford to eat. You dreamed of having a family and a house some day, but that would be hard to do coming from the life you’ve had so far. You work hard in school, and earned college scholarships
, and went on to getting a great job and buying a house. That takes a lot more effort and work than if you grew up rich, never worried about money, had private tutors, could afford to go to one of the best colleges
, and then got a job in your father’s company
. They both achieved their dreams, but the person born into the richer family didn’t really
have to put in as much effort as the one who worked his whole life to get there.
Special thanks goes to the members of staff development and human resources department for their continued support. Finally I would like to thank the beginning teachers, mentor-teachers and administrators in our school division that
assisted me with this project.
If you grew up in a family that never supported you with your dreams or goals, it would definitely be harder to achieve your dream. One thing that they could do without meaning to affect you would be moving, which would cause you to enter a whole new school district
, make new friends, and adapt to your new community, so even if your parents do want you to succeed, they might be making it harder for you without even realizing it. In some cases, it is the family that pushes you
to reach your goals, maybe by having you do extra things with school, or to help teach you work skills for when you get a job. I think that even with a family that isn’t supporting you, it makes it harder, but it is still possible to achieve your dream.
Their excitement and willingness to provide feedback made the completion of this research an enjoyable experience.
