Short essay on the Duties of a Good Citizen

A citizen is a person who lives in a particular country for a long time.

He may be born in the country or not but, by virtue of his long stay in the country he earns the right to the citizenship of the country and starts being so called.
We are all citizens of one country or the other. We acquire citizenship of our country generally by virtue of our birth. But to be a good citizen requires a lot of training and understanding. As the subject of a country, every citizen has some duties and he enjoys at the same time certain rights. All of us have a right to take part in the legislative as well as judicial activities of this country and can give free expression to our views and opinions from the platform and through the press.

The basic difference in the acquired citizenship after stay and that of being a citizen by birth is that, when a person acquires it, it is to be by an application for the same. When a person is born in a place, he is automatically a citizen of it, and does not have to apply for it.

Now, as we all know that man, no matter where he stays, in the family, in the society, in the office or in the country, he has some obligations towards them.

These obligations of an individual are called duties.
A good citizen is a blessing to society. He feels that he has certain responsibilities towards the state, just as the state has certain responsibilities towards him. Thus he is aware of both his privileges and his duties.

Thus, in all his activities, man has some duties, and so as a citizen also man has some obligations to the country of his citizenship. In this Essay we will discuss the duties of a man as a citizen of a country.

We all are aware of our Fundamental Duties,if not then here it is and Even if we follow these fundamental duties we will surely be doing our bit in making India a Great Country..

When a person belongs to a particular country whether the country of his birth or the country that he has adopted due to a long stay, it is to be remembered that, the country has nurtured him.

He has grown there, avails of all facilities and advantages that accrue to the people of the country and has been granted all kinds of rights of the citizens of that country.

This is given to an individual because it is all necessary for the healthy growth of the individual.

If he was not to be given that, he may not have been able to grow to his full bloom.
A good citizen must respect the cultural heritage of his country, i.e. he will have to respect the heroes, the prophets, the sages and saints of his country. He must respect the race which has given him birth. He must always keep in mind the future of this country. He must raise the standard of living of his country by working honestly. Obedience to laws is the next important public duty of a citizen. Society can make no progress if the people have no respect for laws. If a citizen finds that a particular law is bad, he should try to get if replaced by constitutional means. He should no un-necessarily resist a law.

This much is fine, but, this is only one side of the coin of citizenship.

When on the one hand an individual is given so much, the other side of the coin would obviously be to clarify and express his duties.

For, let us never forget that, all rights have their corresponding duties.
A Good citizen needs to imbibe many qualities. That he has some duties and responsibilities to bear is true, but at the same time he also enjoys some rights and privileges as a citizen of a Free State while he has every right to participate in the judicial, legal, political and social affairs of the nation. He has also some responsibilities i.e. not to injure the sentiments of others and to protect the weak against the strong. To stand by state under all the conditions, is his first and foremost duty.

Every right that a human being enjoys in any sphere of life, there are his corresponding duties that go hand in hand with these rights. Thus, on the one hand are the rights of the citizen and the other side are his duties.

In this sense, a person may be an English citizen, or an Indian citizen or an American citizen. In whatever sense this word is used, the citizen is the ‘person who has certain duties and responsibilities along with rights and privileges. While he has all the right to participate in the political, legal, judicial, social, economic and religious affairs of the country, he has the responsibility to have regard and respect for the culture and heritage of the country, maintain social harmony and love and not to do any such thing which may hurt the public sentiments and spoil peace and harmony in society. He needs to take care of the weak and poor. He should be loyal and dutiful to society.

A good citizen has to fulfill several duties in order to honestly enjoy all his rights. The first duty of a good citizen is to understand his rights and enjoy them but, with wisdom and an analytical mind.

The first obvious duty of a citizen is loyalty to the country of his birth or adoption. Patriotism does not mean “My country, right or wrong”; but it does mean that in a national crisis or danger, a citizen must be prepared to support and defend his country even, if necessary, with his life.

He must be loyal to the country that gives him all that it has, to enjoy and grow.

He must consider the country of his living, as his own mother, for, just like the mother helps a child to grow, so does the country provide for him all that he needs to grow in every way, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Then when a country gives so much, is it not its right to demand loyalty from the individual? How can the country ever expect or accept disloyalty from a man it helps live and grow.

How can disloyalty to a mother be accepted? Such breach of faith and loyalty, to my mind should be considered as a grave offence.

Besides, can we ever disown a mother? Thus a good citizen is one who is always found to be proud of belonging to his country - whether of birth or after living.
First of all, a good citizen should be very loyal to the country of his birth. He should have great concern for his motherland. He should see his country above everything. He should always be ready to protect his country if there is a need to do so. He should be prepared to risk his life for the sake of his motherland. He should be ready to sacrifice everything for his country. He needs to be a nationalist.

The second quality of a good citizen is that he should always follow all the laws of the land meticulously with the greatest of caution. He should never be found breaking or flouting any law.

He must love and respect all his fellow citizens who are to him like his brothers and sisters.

The society in which the good citizen lives, must feel his presence as a good person, a reliable person and as a loving and helpful person.
A good citizen is a man of good habit and noble thinking. He promotes peace and harmony in society. He has respect for others’ faiths and beliefs and does nothing to offend others. He is cooperative, friendly, selfless and humble.

He himself must be a good brother/sister to the others living in that country.

Besides being good, a duty of a good citizen also extends to his helping in the development of the country of his residence, because of the simple reason that, it is his, it belongs to him.

Respect for all that belongs to that country is also one great quality expected from a good citizen.
A good citizen has great respect for the tradition and culture of his country. He has regard for the heroes, saints, seers and their teachings. He tries to follow the tradition and learn good qualities from the great souls. He takes pride to be born in his country. He works hard to change the lot of his people. He helps the poor and needy. He is a cooperative neighbour, an aware citizen and a sincere, hardworking and dutiful person. He is always vigilant against the anti-social elements and criminals. He also makes others aware of their duties and responsibilities.

Thus, a good citizen is one who adjusts with his environment, lives up to the expectations of his fellowmen, according to all norms and rules of the country. He does not act in any way that brings any sort of dishonor to the country.

A good citizen must keep the welfare of his town or city or village foremost in his mind at the time of elections. He should understand the existing educational and other institutions of his country and make efforts to bring about desirable improvements. He must love his neighbours. He must be sympathetic, broad-minded and generous.

With all these essential qualities, any individual belonging to any country can be called a good citizen. A citizen fulfilling these norms will be termed as a good citizen in any country.
